Let’s take a hypothetical situation- you are moving into a new house and you are left with little money sufficient to buy only a piece of furniture. What would you buy? Well, it would most likely be the bed. One of the most essential furniture of the house- the bed is an integral part of any bedroom. In fact we spend at least one-third of our lifespan on this furniture. We relax and rejuvenate, spend quality time with our spouse and kids, venture our dreams, and recharge for the next day- all with the aid of the bed. So, it is extremely important that we choose the right bed for us.
Right Bed Size
A vital factor is the size of the bed. A smaller size might be insufficient for your needs, and a larger one would mean unnecessary wastage of valuable space. So, choose the bed size judiciously. It should depend on what you need and at the same time aptly fit your bedroom. Here are a few standard bed sizes you can opt for:
- Single bed (width x length)
- Small – 2’6 x 6′
- Standard – 3′ x 6’3″
- Double bed (width x length)
- Small – 4′ x 6’3″
- Standard (Queen) – 4’6″ x 6’3″
- King – 5′ x 6’6″
- Super king – 6′ x 6’6″
These sizes are readily available in the market. You can also go for a custom size as per your needs. These points may help you decide the right bed size.
The first question you should address to zero in on the right bed size is: What is the ideal bed size as per your needs? Judge what is right for you. For e.g. If your spouse is 6’ tall, you might like to go for a king size bed. You have a 5-year old kid who is scared to sleep alone, so a super king size can easily provide space for your kid, your spouse and you.
The next important question is: Can your empty bedroom house this bed size? We consider an empty bedroom because the bed is the only inevitable furniture of the bedroom. Both the bed and bedroom fail if they cannot provide you sound and relaxing sleep. You can do away with everything else in the bedroom but the bed. So, while choosing the bed size do not take into account the other furniture which you want your bedroom to accommodate. They are secondary.
See if you can place the bed in your bedroom in such a manner that three sides of the bed are unblocked and at least 2’ is left on either sides of the bed. This space is necessary for convenient usage of the bed and also aid floor cleaning. Also, ensure that at least 4’ is left at the leg-side of the bed. Is this position of the bed hindering movement in the bedroom? If no, then voila! You have found the right bed size for your bedroom. Else opt for the next best size. If your bedroom is space constrained, look for innovative beds that suit your needs.
Right Bed type
Once the right bed size is decided, the next factor to look for is the bed type. The design of the bed dictates your bedroom interiors, so it is necessary to pick the right bed type. If you want to lend your bedroom a traditional look, a sleigh bed can be the right choice. A sleigh bed is usually equipped with rounded headboard and footboard. The headboard provides convenient backrest. Decorative headboards and footboards significantly add to the elegance of the bedroom. Another knightly option is the canopy bed. A canopy bed is provided with four posts on the four corners of the bed. A well-designed canopy bed can be an asset to your bedroom. If you want a contemporary look bedroom, platform bed is the ideal choice. A platform bed usually provides a low-lying surface to support to the mattress. It lends a modern yet humble touch to the bedroom. For the kids’ bedroom, a playful and space effective option is bunk bed.
Here are a few other options you can adopt if your bedroom is short of space or if you need to accommodate an extra bed in your house. You can put your living room to multiple uses by incorporating a sofa bed or a couch bed. This can serve the purpose of a regular seating space during the day and a comfortable bed at night. Another preferred space effective solution is the trundle bed. Trundle bed can serve as a double bed but occupies the space of a single bed. You can use it as a divan at day and a double bed at night. Other small space varieties are Murphy bed and futon bed.
Right Bed features
Apart from being the perfect abode to relax, the bed can serve other purposes as well. So, it is important to choose the right bed features. If you frequently use your bed to read, go for a bed with a convenient backrest. A slanted backrest will provide you support while reading. Some beds are also designed with cushioned backrests. Another need the bed can cater to is storage. The bed can provide ample storage space for your bed sheets, bed covers, pillows, pillow covers, cushions, etc. So, it is advisable to go for a bed which is equipped with drawers or boxes. Compliment your bed with night tables on either sides of the bed. Night tables add to the bedroom décor and also act as storage for accessories.
Right Bed accessories
You can accessorize your bed with beautiful cushions, pillows, lamps, antiques, carpets, rugs, etc.
